It takes nine to 12 months to complete and involves study sessions either online or attendance one day per month - typically on a Saturday - comprising theoretical and practical input as well as observation in the workplace. Assessment is by workplace observations, carrying out practical tasks at work, and producing a portfolio of written work.
Those studying for the Level 5 under the Government's Apprenticeship scheme also cover a BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Management, Personal Learning & Thinking Skills plus Level 2 in the functional skills of maths, English and ICT. These provide learners with the skills and abilities they need to be able to work confidently, effectively and independently.
